Extended Software Support: A Game-Changer?

A recent report by Android Headlines raises the possibility of Samsung’s decision to provide seven years of software support for the upcoming Galaxy S24 series, though it remains unconfirmed whether this includes security patches or full Android/One UI updates. Nevertheless, if this speculation holds true, it could have a far-reaching impact on the entire smartphone industry, potentially influencing other manufacturers.

Notably, Google garnered attention with its Pixel 8 launch by offering an unprecedented seven years of software and security updates. During this period, Samsung hinted at the idea of extending security updates, though details regarding Android and One UI updates remained undisclosed. Additionally, the report highlights that certain Galaxy AI features from Samsung will remain free “until at least 2025,” implying the potential introduction of a paywall for access to these capabilities starting in 2026.

What About Previous Models?

While the focus is on the Galaxy S24 series, the fate of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series and last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 also remains uncertain. There’s a possibility that Samsung could extend the speculated seven-year software support to these models as well, as hinted by recent reports. Historically, when the company increased the number of Android and One UI upgrades from three to four, it also included the Galaxy S21, which had launched the previous year. Therefore, a similar pattern may emerge if this rumored extension becomes a reality.

The Journey of the Galaxy S23

The Galaxy S23 boasts the One UI 5.1 software based on Android 13, tailored specifically for the Galaxy series. Following its launch, the device received its initial significant update to One UI 6, built on Android 14. Samsung has committed to providing a total of four software updates, ensuring software support until 2027, with an additional year on the final version. This implies that the Galaxy S23 series can expect updates up to Android 17 in 2026, assuming Google continues with its current naming convention for updates.
